At surface level, Cass McCombs is not an exciting performer. He can be excruciatingly (and confusingly) deadpan in the scant moments he actually speaks. “We are a band from New York,” says the LA-based drifter. His lack of crowd interaction, down to a complete absence of eye contact,is unsettling. Immersed in sprawling, prowling tunes like ‘Name Written In Water’ and ‘That’s That’, it’s as if Cass and his players don’t even register the audience’s presence. It’s not the sensory assault he’s usually capable of, but the appeal of his lush country-rock is undeniable, and rickety early-2014 single ‘Big Wheel’ eventually coaxes a rapturous reception from an otherwise lethargic crowd.
